Momentum is proud to announce the project team that delivered the Elmhurst University Boiler Decentralization & Chiller Plant project has won the ASHRAE Illinois Chapter’s Excellence in Engineering Technology award!
This is a great honor, and it recognizes the hard work the Momentum, Elmhurst University, AMS Industries, Cyclone Energy Group , and Trane teams put in to make this project an overwhelming success.
Elmhurst University went into the project with an aging central boiler and steam distribution system, as well as obsolete screw chillers and cooling towers.
The project team undertook a multi-year modernization effort that replaced the 55-year-old boiler system with a decentralized boiler system across 17 buildings. The modular boiler design and modern controls technology dramatically boosts reliability while cutting operating and maintenance costs. The old chillers and cooling towers were removed and replaced with modern centrifugal coolers on top of the old heating plant/new chiller plant.

The end result is a heating and cooling system that enables variable capacity, allowing dramatically higher efficiency, especially in shoulder seasons, with a 32% reduction in therms. The new, efficient system also returned over 6% of the project value in rebates from local utility providers.
